These
intructions are for the MY2002 Subaru WRX, will work with the
2.5RS also. You will need 10/12 mm sockets, universal joint for
reaching the grounding point on the firewall behind the top mount
intercooler, wire stripper or box cutter knife, metric allen keys,
3m electrical tape or equivalent, and a wire crimper.
Each Standard Grounding Mod kits comes with 1 foot of 4 gauge
cable, 15 feet of 8 gauge cable, 1 gold plated 1 to 4 ground cable
distribution brass block with clear plastic cover, 1 4 gauge gold
plated ring terminal, 4 8 gauge gold plated ring terminal, washer
for 4 gauge gold ring terminal, various wire ties and a 'grounded
by dreamspeedonline.com' sticker.
Be sure to wipe down the 4 ground points with a clean piece of
cloth. This will ensure good grounding conductivity. The distribution
block should be placed on top of the battery (figure
1) you may choose to use double sided tape but it won't be
necessary since wire tires will be used to secure the 4 8 gauge
wires to the battery tie down bar.
Measure the 4 gauge wire from the battery ground terminal to the
4 gauge opening of the distribution block. Cut the 4 gauge wire
appropriately and be sure that the wire does not touch the body
of the vehicle. This will help prevent unnecessary wear and tear
of the ground cable. Using the 4 gauge gold plated terminal ring
place it on one end of the 4 gauge cable and crimp it. You may
use the 4 gauge wire jacket or use some electrical tape around
the crimped portion of the terminal ring.
Remove the nut from the battery ground terminal and place the
crimped ring terminal and place a washer between the nut and the
ring terminal. Tighten the nut and be sure not to overtighten
or else stripping of the bolt will occur. Be sure that the ground
battery terminal cable does not move.
There
are at least 4 ground terminals located in the MY2002 Subaru WRX
engine bay that should be used. The ground point near the battery
next to the fuse box (figure
1), the ground point located on the driver side intake manifold
(figure
2), driver side shock tower bolt (figure
3), and the grounding point on the firewall located behind
the top mount intercooler (figure
4). Be very careful when removing and reinstalling the nut
on the driver side shock tower bolt, excessive force will cause
the bolt to snap off!
Wiring each other ground point is quite simple. Start by loosely
measuring the distance of the distribution block to the ground
point using the 8 gauge wires. Once satisfied with the length
cut and trim some of the wire jacket to allow terminal ring crimping
and bolting to the distribution block. For the grounding point
at the driver side intake manifold and the grounding point on
the firewall behind the top mount intercooler it's best to have
some wire slack to allow any engine movement. Also using an universal
joint will allow easy removal of the grounding bolt on the firewall
behind the top mount intercooler.
HAPPY
GROUNDING!
